We need to understand that our moods and emotions are intrinsically tied to the well-being and psychological state of our internal organs. ‘Really?’ you say. Yes, really. Each part of the body has a consciousness or set of psychological states that relate to its physiological job description.
The Gall Bladder
For example, one of the jobs of the gall bladder is to decide when it’s going to squirt bile into the small intestine in order to digest fats. That’s one of its physiological functions. In this way, the consciousness of decision-making in the body as well as in the mind is linked to the gall bladder.
Here’s another one. Physiologically, the spleen holds a reserve of blood in case we need it unexpectedly. So the spleen is partially responsible for disaster relief in the event that our body loses or needs more blood. It must hold that awareness in its ‘mind’ all the time. So you could say — and in Chinese medicine they do — that the spleen is responsible for subconscious thinking or worry.
The Connection Between Equivocation and Weak Ankles
Now here’s something interesting: in Chinese medicine, the gall bladder meridian (a meridian being a river of energy running through the body) runs down the outside of the ankles. The spleen meridian runs up the inside of the ankles. When there is a conflict about some decision that needs to be made, there is often a conflict between the gall bladder and the spleen and sense of going back and forth between ‘should I or shouldn’t I.’ And when this happens, a person is much more likely to sprain their ankle. In fact, in professional football, 90% of the ankle sprains occur during recruiting season. The players are worrying about what decision to make and they are equivocating and weakening their ankles.
Just ask anyone who has ever sprained their ankle if they were either trying to make a decision or about to take a step into something new and they were worried about it, often subconsciously. Understanding this kind of interplay between the body and mind, is not just fascinating, it’s an integral and crucial piece of uncovering the messages that our body gives us that need our attention in order for both our bodies and our minds to be more harmonious. So when we have physical problem, we would be smart to look at BOTH body and the mind for potential solutions.
